CHIMNEY REPOINTING
Repointing a chimney requires removing the mortar to a certain depth and replacing it with fresh mortar. It’s important that the mortar is removed safely and properly because it can be a dusty endeavour. Also, depending on the method of removal, damage can be done to the surrounding bricks or stones. Here at Island Chimney Solutions, when we are repointing chimneys in Victoria, BC and Duncan, BC, we use tuck pointing grinders with dust shrouds attached to vacuums, as well as pneumatic air hammers with mortar removal bits to eliminate dust and ensure that the chimney isn’t damaged in the process. We then grout the chimney with specific mortars tailored to the age of the chimney and the original mortar used in its construction. This is a crucial step because it’s important that the old and the new mortar expand and contract during our freeze and thaw cycles at the same rate and in conjunction with the bricks or stones. If done properly, repointing can increase the longevity of a chimney and its ability to safely vent your home’s heat sources.
With over 60 years of combined experience, the team at Island Chimney Solutions is your professional choice when it comes to repointing your chimney with care and precision.
