CHIMNEY CAPS
Concrete caps or crowns are also referred to as chimney caps — not to be confused with chimney pots (small structures which look like concrete houses and are made to fit overtop of flue liners in an effort to shield the interior of the chimney from the elements). Chimney caps can either be repaired or replaced. Repairing a concrete cap or mortared cap entails applying a new layer overtop of the old in order to seal and cover any cracks that have formed and to ensure that there are no gaps around the flue liners that water can work its way into.
Replacing a concrete crown entails removing the old one, installing a bond-break, wrapping the flue liners in heat-resistant materials before forming and pouring a new concrete cap, and, lastly, caulking around the flue liners to keep the weather from penetrating the inner workings of the chimney. Both repairing and/or replacing concrete chimney crowns is essential to a chimney’s health and function. Trust the pros at Island Chimney Solutions to make sure that your chimney’s cap is working as it should and will continue to for years to come.
