Restoring a chimney usually entails repointing the mortar between the bricks or stones (tearing out the old mortar and replacing it with the new), restoring the chimney cap (the mortar or concrete on top of the brick or stonework), replacing the flue liners (clay rectangles which act as vents for the chimney), and re-doing the flashing (sheet metal which ties into the base of the chimney at the roofline).
